What Are Halves, Thirds, and Fourths?
When we split things into equal parts, we get fractions!
A half is when we split something into 2 equal parts. A third is 3 equal parts, and a fourth is 4 equal
parts. Let's learn to recognize them!
How to Identify Fractions
1️⃣ Count how many equal parts there are
2️⃣ Look at the size of each part (they should be equal!)
3️⃣ Name it: 2 parts = halves, 3 parts = thirds, 4 parts = fourths
Let's Practice Together!
Example 1: Shape Fractions
Click on each shape to see what fraction it shows!
This is a half! The circle is split into 2 equal
parts.
This is a third! The triangle is split into 3 equal
parts.
This is a fourth! The square is split into 4 equal
parts.
Parent Tips 🌟
- Kitchen fractions: When cutting food (like sandwiches or fruit), point out when you're making halves, thirds, or fourths.
- Fraction scavenger hunt: Look for objects around your home that are naturally divided (clock halves, window panes, etc.).
- Paper folding: Fold paper together to create halves, thirds, and fourths - great for hands-on learning!
